Alray Taylor Second Chance Scholarship Fund Corporation

The Alray Scholars Program is a grassroots nonprofit that fulfills a critical but otherwise unmet need in the Boston area. Combining scholarships with one-on-one mentoring, we help graduates of Boston Public Schools who started but stopped college return to school to earn their degree.

While there are many good programs that help launch Boston students into college, and some that work to keep them enrolled, the Alray Scholars Program is alone in focusing on the reality faced by the many students who have left college before earning their degree. The unfortunate truth is that, because of debt issues, low-income students who start college but fail to graduate are usually worse off than those who never started at all.

The Alray Scholars Program is delivering results by helping promising students change the trajectory of their life. Our scholars are earning their post-secondary diplomas and gaining the added earning power that comes with that achievement. And after they graduate, they’re paying it forward by mentoring new students coming into the program.

Citizen Schools Massachusetts

Citizen Schools’ mission is to change the life trajectories of low-income students. We partner with middle schools to close the achievement gap by expanding the learning day. Our extended day programs combine hands-on learning and leadership development to build the skills that students need in order to succeed in middle school and advance toward high school graduation, college attainment, and positions of leadership in their careers and communities. Students work closely with talented volunteers and our staff of front-line educators and learn to make the connection between current learning in middle school and future success, while building the skills they need to pursue fulfilling careers.

House of Seven Gables Settlement Association

Originally built by sea captain and merchant John Turner in 1668, The House of the Seven Gables is one of the oldest surviving 17th century wooden mansions in America, and one of  New England's most important historic sites. Today, The House of Seven Gables' campus constitutes its own National Historic Landmark District on The National Register of Historic Places, and includes the seaside Colonial Revival Gardens.  The Gables received designation as a National Historic Landmark District in 2007.

The House of the Seven Gables is also a long-standing community service provider. In 1910, local preservationist and philanthropist Caroline Emmerton purchased the mansion to preserve the house for future generations and support Salem’s immigrant population with educational and job skills training. Ms. Emmerton opened the historic home as a museum and used the admissions proceeds to fund what was then called “Settlement Work”. This dual mission of preservation and education still exists today and makes The Gables unique among American cultural institutions.

    Raising A Reader (RAR-MA Inc.)

Raising A Reader Massachusetts is an evidence-based early literacy program that seeks to close the academic achievement gap by helping families of young children develop, practice, and maintain habits of reading together at home. Our work, which both increases access to books and offers families tools and resources to strengthen the culture of reading at home, is driven by 25 years of research that shows a significant factor influencing a child’s academic success is being regularly read to by their parents and adult caregivers prior to entering kindergarten. Our goal is to end the cycle of low literacy by helping families across Massachusetts develop high impact home reading routines that lay the groundwork for a lifetime of learning, success, and productive, responsible citizenship.

    Reach Out and Read, Inc.

Reach Out and Read gives young children a foundation for success by incorporating books into pediatric care and encouraging families to read aloud together. With unparalleled access to families with young children, Reach Out and Read medical providers give books to children during regular pediatric checkups from infancy until they start school, with special emphasis on children growing up in low-income communities. In addition, they encourage families to read aloud and engage with their infants, toddlers and preschoolers every day. Families served by Reach Out and Read read together more often, and their children enter kindergarten with larger vocabularies and stronger language skills. When families read aloud to their young children, they can give them a better start to life.

Urban College of Boston A Two Year College Inc.

Urban College of Boston (UCB) was created by the legendary former head of ABCD, Robert M. Coard, who said "Men and women should not be condemned to a life of poverty due to a lack of opportunity." Instilling hope and creating opportunity has been the mission of UCB since Bob Coard’s dream in the 1960s, becoming a reality in 1993.

The mission continues to offer affordable and quality higher education as a pathway for low-income and racially and linguistically diverse city residents to achieve their goals.
Among New England colleges and universities, UCB has the highest percentage of Hispanic enrollments (59%), 4th highest African-Americans (23%), and 8th highest Asian-Americans (10%). At least 60% speak English as a second language, over 90% work full-time, and almost all are first generation college students. The diversity of UCB students is vastly underrepresented in higher education due to low income status and limited English proficiency.
UCB is committed to educating students from these backgrounds so that they will complete their two-year degree, advance into growing careers, and be prepared to earn a four year degree.
