The Giving Common Challenge Rules


1. All gifts must be made by credit card on the Giving Common Challenge website between 8 a.m. EDT on October 10th, 2012 and 8 p.m. EDT on October 11th, 2012 to be eligible for the Giving Common Challenge. MasterCard, Visa, and Discover donations only will be accepted for this Challenge.  Customer service will be provided by phone and email from 9am to 5pm on October 10th and 11th, 2012.

2. Gifts may also be made in writing by Boston Foundation Donor Advised Fund account holders received by The Boston Foundation staff between 9am on October 1, 2012 and 5pm on October 9th, 2012.  Donor Advised Fund gifts will be counted towards the totals to determine Grand Prize winners, but Donor Advised Fund gifts will not be counted toward Time-Based Prizes. The minimum Donor Advised Fund grant amount will remain at $250.

3. Gifts from Donor Advised Funds made after October 9th at 5pmwill not be counted as part of the Challenge; checks and cash will not be counted as part of the Challenge.  Gifts made on other websites will also not be counted as part of the Challenge.

4. The minimum gift that will be accepted for the Challenge is $25. The current maximum gift by credit card is set at $5,000.  Please note that only the first $5,000 of gifts from any single donor, whether made by Donor Advised Fund or credit card, will be counted towards the “Most Money Raised” Grand Prizes.

5. To be eligible for the Giving Common Challenge, all gifts must be made by donors.  A donor is defined as an individual, foundation or business entity.  Organizations are prohibited from donating to themselves and to any affiliated entities.

6. In order to participate in the Giving Common Challenge your organization must submit all required information and documentation on or by August 1, 2012 and work with the Giving Common team to provide any additional information necessary for your profile to be published by September 24, 2012.  Nonprofit organizations with profiles published prior to September 24, 2012, including all currently published profiles, will be included in the Challenge.  The Boston Foundation is not eligible for any Giving Common Challenge Prizes.  To confirm that your organization’s profile is published, visit  There is no cost or entry fee to participate.

7. Time-based and grand prizes based on unique donors will be awarded based on the number of unique gifts to an individual organization. A unique gift is defined as one gift to one organization from one donor. Multiple gifts made by the same donor to the same organization will be counted as a single gift to that organization for prizes dependent on unique donors. Donors are allowed and encouraged to make gifts to multiple organizations of their choice.

8. No organization can win more than one Grand Prize, and no organization can win more than one Time-Based prize However, it is possible for organizations to win one of each.

9. Each gift must be 100% tax deductible, irrevocable, and unrestricted. Donors cannot make gifts in exchange for any goods or services.

10. All gifts will be paid to the participating charity net of a 5.5% credit card transaction and processing fees paid directly to vendors.  Costs and additional processing fees incurred by The Boston Foundation in support of the Giving Common Challenge above these 5.5% fees will be covered by The Boston Foundation.

11. Participating charities will receive all donor information within one week of the Challenge unless a donor has requested to remain anonymous.

For tax purposes, neither products nor services were provided by the Boston Foundation as a condition of this gift.  The Boston Foundation has exclusive legal control over the contributed assets.  All gifts to the Boston Foundation are subject to variance power which is described in the Articles of Organization of the Foundation.  Information provided is general and educational in nature. It is not intended to be, and should not be construed as, legal, tax or financial advice.
