Overview

Mission Statement

Established in 1861, the Brookhouse Home for Aged Women is a non-profit corporation serving as a Level IV Department of Public Health licensed rest home residence for up to 36 women with a minimum age of 55 years. Its mission is to provide an affordable familiar home setting that enables residents to maintain their independence, their privacy and their exercise of personal choices while receiving supports from responsible staff.

Background Statement

Brookhouse Home was established by Captain Robert Brookhouse in the late 1800's. Captain Brookhouse amassed his fortune in the West African cowhide trade. Once his fortune had been made, Brookhouse, like many of Salem's wealthy inhabitants during that time, began to use his money for philanthropic efforts.
Built in 1810 for Benjamin Crowninshield, a prominent Salem merchant, the mansion displays the handcrafted designs of Salem's premier architect, Samuel McIntire. Captain Brookhouse purchased the property in 1854. After his death, the home was gifted to the Association for the Relief of Aged Women funded by Brookhouse's son's wife in 1861. Following the establishment of a board of trustees, it opened in October of 1861.
In 1906 enlargements to the rear of the building were made with endowment funds to accommodate the on-going needs of more women. By 1910 the building had installed steam heat, modern plumbing, electricity and an elevator. The Home retains many of its early features such as splayed and reeded window lintels, a central Doric Revival Porch and interior carved woodwork attritbuted to Samual McIntire. A structure adjacent to the Home has been demolished and is now the site of beautiful gardens created and tended by the Salem Garden Club.
Today the Brookhouse Home continues to honor its mission of serving the needs of aged women. As many as 36 women ages 55 years or older enjoy private rooms in a supportive setting that provides home cooked meals, laundry and medication management services as well as social activities and prescribed outpatient physical, occupational and mental health therapies. A clinical director, two physicians that make house calls and local visiting nurse associations provide on-site medical services.
The Association operates as a non-profit corporation in the tradition of the original charter with income derived from various sources including conventional direct bequests. The care of many residents is subsidized by MassHealth and Social Security coverage. Overseeing the operations is a Board of Directors consisting of local professionals. Brookhouse Home operates under Department of Public Health guidelines and proudly presents a "deficiency free" survey.
Brookhouse Home welcomes senior women of all races, creeds or national origins. Each lady enjoys the privacy of her own room decorated with her own belongings. We also offer respite services for women who may require supervised supports for shorter periods of time.

CEO Statement

The Brookhouse Home for Aged Women is a unique organization in many ways. Firstly, the home was opened in 1861, a gift from Robert Brookhouse to what has then known as the Association for the Relief of Aged and Destitute Women of Salem. In 2011 the Brookhouse Home celebrated its 150th birthday in offering residential supports to senior women.
 
Initially the Brookhouse mansion was home to 12 women and now provides supports to 36 women. Brookhouse Home is licensed as a Rest Home by the MA Department of Public Health. The home is a not-for-profit organization and revenue is generated by residents' room and board and reimbursement from both Medicaid and Transitional Assistance. These supports are yet another unique character of the organization when compared to for-profit Assisted Living Programs that are only a viable option for those few who have the financial resources to pay privately for those services. Fortuantely because of these reimbursements, Brookhouse Home is a viable option regardless of limited or poor income conditions.
 
While the property itself is very large and old, being built in 1810, lending itself to the need for costly repairs and maintenance, we are very fortunate that because of its size and number of rooms, we can offer each resident her own private room. This has proved to be a major quality of life factor that allows residents not only their privacy, but a room that is both furnished and decorated with their personal belongings, making it feel like home. Another unique support avaialbe at Brookhouse is medication administration managed by trained staff. Often potential residents and their families report the problems associated with self medicating. Vision problems paired with memory impairment result in a resident not remembering to take her medications or at times multi-dosing, placing her at significant risk. At Brookhouse Home, the risk is eliminated in an environment that makes self-medicating is not necessary.
 
It is noteworthy to report that for many, if not most residents, without the option of residential support in a rest home facility like Brookhouse Home, residents who cannot live successfully on their own within the community would be forced to live in nursing homes for the supports and supervision necessary to maintain their safety. Brookhouse Home is unique in that it offers residents a community of women within itself, that not only results in socializing and interacting with others, but allows the women to develop friendships completely independently of family and staff.

Board Chair Statement

I am writing today as the Board President for the Brookhouse Home for Women in Salem, MA. Brookhouse is celebrating its 150th year of continued service to aged women who need assistance.
 
The Brookhouse is a 36-bed Medicaid-certified level IV facility. The home has individual private bedrooms where each lady enjoys the ability to decorate with her own belongings. There is also a large yard that is accessible for outdoor recreation as well as summer relaxation. The Salem Garden Club supplements care of the gardens.
 
Salem is a city in Essex County, Massachusetts with a population of 40,000. We are 16 miles northeast of Boston and 23 miles south of Rockport. Salem is also the home of Salem State University, The Peabody Essex Museum, North Shore Medical Center and Spaulding North, both Partners-operated  medical  facilities.
 
Today's healthcare environment presents many challenges. There are regulatory, financial and quality of life issues but ironically one of the biggest challenges for the Brookhouse is also the biggest asset: its magnificicent building.
 
Robert Brookhouse donated the building in the last 1800's. In 1861 the mission to care for elderly women began. In 1906 a significant addition was added. By 1910 the building had steam heat, modern plumbing, electricity and an elevator. We have recently replaced all of the 121 windows and purchased new dining room furniture. We are currently in the process to begin work on 8 resident bathrooms that need significant updating and modernization. The task of maintaining the building itself can at times be daunting, but as you might guess, very rewarding.

Activities At Brookhouse Home

Structured activities provided daily by an Activities Director that include but are not limited to: art and crafts, bingo, word games, movies, outings to community venues, ice cream socials and teas, music/dance/movements,  exercises and interaction with various community groups. Six large indoor public spaces as well as a patio and gardens support unscripted interaction among residents and offer a variety of books, games, puzzels and movies.

Success on quality of life issues is monitored by but not limited to the following indicators:

2. Number of refusals to accept suggested medical treatments;
3. Incidents of potential harm to self or others;
4. Continued level of functioning, both mentally and physically.
Examples of Program Success 
The average stay of a woman at Brookhouse Home is 8 years. Without Brookhouse supports, that woman would likely be in a nursing home or living precariously in an isolated community setting with an ever-shrinking availability of community supports.
As a resident wrote in 2008:
We were born in 1913 or 1955, or any of the years between. We are the women of Brookhouse. We are someone's daughter. We are somebody's sweetheart, with stars in our eyes and dreams in our hearts. We are sisters, aunts, mothers, grandmothers, great-grandmothers and great-aunts. We have enriched the world as teachers, nurses, volunteers, dieticians, therapists, social workers, community activists an so much more. We will find great treasure here among us. Treasure in the hearts, minds, wisdom, history and experience we share. Here at Brookhouse. A  community of women. Women like us!

Activities for residents of Brookhouse include the following challenges:
1. Staff- new activities director recently hired, would like to expand by at least another half-time position;
2. Funding- although there is money allocated in budget, additional funding is always appreciated. Friends of Brookhouse, a volunteer fundraising group, often contributes money and in-kind services to residents via the activities department.
3. Volunteers- you can never have too many! Volunteers organized via the activities department.

Impact
