Overview

Mission Statement

Haley House uses food and the power of community to break down barriers between people, transfer new skills, and revitalize neighborhoods. We believe in radical solutions: solving problems at their root by challenging attitudes that perpetuate suffering while building alternative models of community. 

Background Statement

In 1966,  Haley House founders Kathe & John McKenna welcomed homeless men into their basement apartment, offering food and a warm place to sleep. Along with a growing community of like-minded friends, they purchased a row house (23 Dartmouth) soon thereafter, opening a permanent soup kitchen to serve the increasing number of people living on the streets.

This simple act of hospitality set the tone for the mission and model of change employed by Haley House in the fifty years since: people living together while feeding and befriending those living on the fringe of society has formed over two generations of deeply committed citizens. "Graduates" of this community have gone on to great things: serving the marginalized through medicine, education, public policy, and the media. 

In 1979, Haley House became the first homeless provider to develop permanent housing. Today, we own and manage over 100 housing units, offering dignified residences for formerly homeless individuals, families and others in need of affordable, permanent shelter.

For 30 years, Haley House maintained a biodynamic farm in rural Massachusetts (Noonday Farm, est. 1982). In 2012, the farm was sold to a land trust in order to focus resources towards burgeoning urban agriculture collaborations (South End: with McKinley School and Roxbury: Thornton Gardens, with Hawthorne Youth & Community Center). These initiatives provide fertile ground for experiential learning about seed to table nutrition along with greater accessibility to the farm and its harvest for all programming. 

In 1996 guests of the Soup Kitchen began the Bakery Training Program, teaching others how to bake bread. With strong neighborhood and philanthropic support,  it quickly outgrew its home in the soup kitchen. In 2005 we opened our social enterprise café in Dudley Square, in response to community-voiced desire for healthy food options and gathering space.

Haley House Bakery Café has since blossomed into a celebrated community hub offering employment, job and life-skills training for ex-offenders (Transitional Employment Program), culinary education for underserved youth (Take Back the Kitchen), and a forum for arts and culture. The cafe serves as a bridge between Boston's neighborhoods, helping to overcome barriers of race, education and economic disparity.

Approaching our 50th anniversary, we are poised to celebrate our past while continuing to respond creatively to suffering and injustice in all forms. 



Impact Statement

Accomplishments:

  • NOTABLE AWARDS: In 2014, Haley House was the grateful recipient of the Neighborhood Builder Award (Bank of America Charitable Foundation) and the Out-of-the-Blue Award (the Boston Foundation).
  • THORNTON GARDENS: In partnership with Hawthorne Youth and Community Center, we broke ground on a new urban farming plot in Roxbury (Highland Park) where we piloted community gardens and a successful summer program for youth (Grow it-Cook it-Share it). BUILDING ACQUISITION: After 10 wonderful years as part of the Roxbury community, we were able to purchase the building at 12 Dade Street in Dudley Square where our successful social enterprise bakery-cafe has made its home since 2005, allowing for much-needed long term stability and possibility for expansion.
  • IMPORTANT MILESTONE: In January, we celebrated the passing of the important 3 year milestone of the successful re-integration of 7 graduates of the Transitional Employment Program with a celebration and official proclamations from the Boston City Council. 

Goals:

  • Implement a new model of economic empowerment in the form of a healthful gourmet pizza shop in the newly renovated Ferdinand Building in Roxbury.
  • Complete critical infrastructural repairs to the building envelope at 23 Dartmouth Street, in anticipation of the celebration of our 50th anniversary and assuring building longevity for years to come.
  • Begin build-out of basement training kitchen at 12 Dade Street to allow for expansion of the Take Back the Kitchen Program along with cafe and catering production, and continue in planning process for long-term growth in this location.
  • Construct farm beds, complete irrigation project, and continue preparing the land for farming at Thornton Farm, in partnership with Hawthorne Youth and Community Center and other Highland Park neighborhood collaborators.
  • Refine and implement organization-wide, program specific outcome measurement tools in order to better assess the impact of our diverse programming. 


Needs Statement

 

  1. Potential collaborators and/or board members with financial expertise, especially interfacing with a capital campaign.

CEO Statement

For more than 50 years, Haley House has strived to diminish the social and economic barriers in our city and challenge the system that creates them. Our Food Program in the South End has been the mainstay of our organization, ensuring that people experiencing homelessness have a healthy meal and an encouraging word to support their dignity amidst the instability of life without a secure home. Our permanent housing is designed to provide a secure home to those needing one – the success of this program is evident in the lack of turnover.

Once housed permanently, people can then address their other needs, including employment, health, nutrition, and family. Our café in Dudley Square is a physical space where many boundaries are challenged, and individuals from different racial, geographic, and economic backgrounds can meet and share a meal, ideas, and rethink their assumptions. Our Café programming encourages thought-provoking conversation, whether it is in the cultural sensitivity curriculum of Take Back the Kitchen program in Health, Nutrition, and Culinary Arts or in the community dialogue at Art is Life itself! performance series.

In breaking down barriers and challenging the existing order, we seek to build a better city that respects the goals and aspirations of all of its inhabitants.


Board Chair Statement

I first came to Haley House in 2005, during the early days of the cafe, serving on the Bakery Advisory Committee. For the last five years I have functioned both as a board member and our gallery curator, showcasing the work of community artists—some underexposed, some well established. I am energized and inspired by Haley House's employees. Along with the organization's diverse programming—from the Transitional Employment Program's critical work on reentry to Take Back the Kitchen's work in health, nutrition and culinary arts to the daily work in the Affordable Housing Program and the Soup Kitchen service that have been a part of Haley House's mission since 1966— the staff's dedication, community spirit, inclusivity, and work ethic make me both excited and honored to be chairing the board at this critical time in the history of this organization.

Direct Services

Haley House's original program - the Soup Kitchen - has expanded to include a weekly Food Pantry and Elder Meal Program. The Soup Kitchen is open to men only for breakfast from 5:30-9:00am Monday-Friday and 9:00am-12:00pm on Sunday. Its goal is to build relationships before men disperse to the chaos of life in the streets; to engender a belief that change is possible. Elder Meals on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-2:30pm and on Sundays from 1:30-4:00pm give women and men who live alone the opportunity for companionship as well as nourishing meals. The Food Pantry takes place every Thursday from 10:30-11:30am, requires prior registration and serves a large Chinese population of elders.

Program Short-Term Success 
Short term success for our direct service program entails building friendships between the "givers" and the "receivers" of services, thereby breaking down the perceived barriers between the "haves" and the "have-nots".Through our direct service programming, we aim to meet the following goals:
  • Reduce hunger by serving food at no cost
  • Promote physical health by serving healthy food (fruits, vegetables, lean protein, healthy fats, organic when possible, and made-from-scratch) and distributing clean, season-appropriate clothes
  • Promote psychological health by encouraging positive and honest interactions between guests, volunteers, and staff, all of whom share a meal together.
Program Long-Term Success  Long-term success is the deletion of a need for direct services (through individual's needs being met through other social "nets").  
Program Success Monitored By  Program success is monitored through volunteer and guest surveys, and through informal feedback gathered in conversations that result from participating in Haley House programming.  
Examples of Program Success 
A representative example from the soup kitchen: 
 
Two months ago, one of our regular soup kitchen guests stopped coming to breakfast.  He had been struggling with an addiction and had stayed for our post-breakfast-shift reflection several times, sharing his predicament with staff and volunteers alike.  Naturally, his disappearance was more than concerning.  About two weeks ago, he reappeared, walking in the door at the end of a post-shift reflection (during which we normally discuss the breakfast shift and thought-provoking questions around issues of social justice).  When asked how he was doing and why he had come back, he said simply and sincerely, "You are a part of my recovery.  I'm going to keep coming back to Haley House as much as I can."  

Haley House Bakery Cafe

Haley House Bakery Cafe arose from the efforts of formerly homeless men to generate pocket money by selling bread to their affluent South End neighbors in the off hours of the soup kitchen. Business grew and Haley House chose to create a vibrant Cafe and training program in Dudley Square, an underserved neighborhood that was requesting a family-friendly venue for healthy food and community-based programming. “Food With Purpose” captures the essence of Haley House Bakery Café, where healthful, affordable, ethnically inspired food is served in a socially responsible, community centered environment that trains and hires people with more regard for their potential than their past.
 
Located at 12 Dade Street in Roxbury, the Bakery Café is open seven days a weey. Beyond normal operating hours, the Café hosts evening events several days a week, a Saturday evening pay-what you-can meal ("Community Tables") and offers cooking classes for youth and job training for people transitioning out of incarceration.

Short-term success for Haley House Bakery Cafe means meeting the following goals and objectives:
  • Increase access healthy food by offering affordable, healthy options in an approachable Café environment. Once a week, the Café will offer a pay-as-you-can meal, advertised as “Community Tables” to friends and neighbors.
  • Increase just employment by offering jobs to individuals with significant barriers to employment
  • Reduce recidivism by offering comprehensive job-readiness training to ex-offenders through the Transitional Employment Program (TEP)
  • Reduce health disparities by teaching children, youth, and adults how to cook from scratch through the Take Back the Kitchen (TBK) class series
  • Build community by hosting bar-b-que’s, weekly artist performance events, film screenings, artist receptions, and “history nights” with Discover Roxbury
 
Program Long-Term Success  Long-term success for the Bakery Cafe entails continuing to act as a model of social and economic inclusion that will be replicated across the city and country. 
Program Success Monitored By  Bakery Cafe success is measured in many ways; by trends in revenue, by number of participants enrolled in our job training or cooking class programs, by number of cultural events offered, by number of attendees at events, etc. Measurements are taken via financial transaction software, participant or attendee surveys, and in-depth interviews. 
Examples of Program Success 

Haley House Bakery Café was a 2011 Social Innovator finalist, a Sustainable Business Leader, and a recipient of a Boston City Council citation for its work with people leaving incarceration. Since opening in 2005, the Bakery Café has dramatically improved its sustainability, increasing its business revenue by an average of 12.5% each year. Using food as a vehicle to create social change, the Bakery Café accomplishes Haley House’s overarching mission to break down barriers and build healthy communities.


Housing Program

In 1979, Haley House became the first homeless service provider in Boston to create permanent housing. Beginning with the Rooming House on Tremont Street, Haley House currently owns and manages 100+ units of permanent, affordable housing in Boston’s South End neighborhood. Some units are reserved for people coming out of shelters and transitional programs while others are family housing. Helping to break the cycle of homelessness, Haley House developed 24 units of permanent, single room occupancy (SRO) housing for formerly homeless individuals. Our average tenancy of 8.3 years and occupancy rate of 96% are remarkable considering the challenging transition between shelter and permanent housing.

Short-term, Haley House's housing program aims to:

Program Long-Term Success  Haley House housing aims for the long-term success of ending homelessness that is caused by lack of affordable, permanent housing.
Program Success Monitored By  Housing program success is closely monitored by Haley House's housing manager and residential staff. While annual surveys of our SRO residents are required by the Boston Housing Authority, Haley House has found that - beyond surveys - residential house managers have been key actors in monitoring the quality of life experienced by residents of our buildings. 
Examples of Program Success  Haley House was recently able to offer permanent, affordable housing to two graduates of our job-training program at Haley House Bakery Cafe. One of our key managerial staff has also secured housing at Haley House, and fellow staff have noted an incredible increase in their co-worker's increased ability to perform their work-related duties. "I don't have to be afraid of walking home anymore," they recently shared, "and I can sleep at night without being afraid." By providing a safe, respectful, affordable, and well-managed place in which to live, Haley House stabilizes and empowers individuals and families.

Urban Agriculture Program

Haley House's urban agriculture initiative was piloted adjacent to the Soup Kitchen in the McKinley Collaborative Garden, a school-based community garden that aims to encourage healthy lifestyles and healthy community at the McKinley South End Academy. Curriculum includes "Science in the Garden," and "Chemistry in the Kitchen." In 2014, we received permission to break ground at Thornton Gardens in the Highland Park section of our Roxbury neighborhood, in partnership with Hawthorne Youth and Community Center and with the help of strong neighborhood support. This past growing season offered several community garden beds, and was the site of our pilot summer farming, cooking, and nutrition program for youth (Grow it. Cook it. Share it.). In the spring of 2015, we will begin further development of the land, including the installation of an irrigation system and permanent farming beds and we will expand our popular summer program. As Haley House continues to develop urban agricultural space in order to source local ingredients and increase the accessibility of our educational programming, we remain rooted in our deep history of organic farming practices. (Haley House began farming in 1982 at Noonday Farm in Winchendon Springs, MA, which was sold in 2012 to a land trust.)

Examples of Program Success 

Since beginning in 2011, the McKinley Garden has blossomed into a neighborhood talking point. Compliments come unsolicited from passersby, but more importantly the students, teachers, and neighbors are regularly seen enjoying the outdoor space while crossing one another’s paths. Similarly, Thornton Gardens in Roxbury has already become a beloved community gathering space, and counts on tremendous neighborhood excitement and buy-in.

As articulated in our Strategic Plan, we have prioritized the lateral integration of Haley House programming. We want to ensure that silos are not created, that cross-pollination occurs inside Haley House as well as in the work in which we engage in the larger community.
 
This is evidenced in the involvement of Transitional Employment Program participants in the Soup Kitchen where they stand as an example of personal change. Live-in Community staff who manage Haley House Direct Services also work in various capacities in our social enterprise Cafe. Customers who learn of Haley House at the Bakery Cafe have brought their skills and perspectives to membership on our Board of Directors. 
 
A number of neighbors of the Soup Kitchen who have lived in the South End during many changes remain steadfast supporters of our work. They come together in their retirement years to hold 'coffee hour discussions' each Tuesday as the morning meal shift ends. The normal antagonism between a neighborhood and a soup kitchen are minimized. This is due in part to the caring nature of local residents as well as the fact that Soup Kitchen staff live in the facility and relate as neighbors themselves. 
 
Several key Haley House management staff are also South End residents. Conversations about our work with those in need become a natural part of relationships with our neighbors.
 
Our housing for formerly homeless adults is unobtrusively situated in our South End neighborhood. The buildings are immaculately maintained, indistinguishable from condos and other nearby market rate housing. Its tenants are similarly accepted as neighbors and appreciated for their longevity. 
 
The Haley House Bakery Cafe has dramatically impacted the rejuvenation of Dudley Square. This is due to the positive programming as well as the healthful fare and has led other struggling commercial districts to seek our participation. We are developing a model that could be replicated in other neighborhoods with few options for good food, jobs with pride and community programming, beginning in the Ferdinand building in Roxbury in the Spring of 2015.
 
Creating models that break through economic and social barriers continues to drive our efforts.

CEO Experience
Bing honed his talent as a socially engaged leader at WGBH and Rounder Records with particular strengths in community development and communication. He is an adept manager with an innate ability to sense peoples' strengths. 
 
Bing has long supported mutually beneficial economic relationships between farmers, chefs and the public. He is active in the Vermont Fresh Network and is founding board member of the Dorchester Community Food Coop. His stint learning bread-baking at the Ballymaloe Cookery in Ireland is a plus!  
 
Bing came to Haley House in 2005, inspired by Kathe McKenna's vision for a community Cafe in Dudley Square. He has skillfully guided Haley House's social enterprise Cafe in its journey to becoming a celebrated catalyst in the community. 
 
In addition to his executive role at Haley House, Bing serves on the Roxbury Strategic Master Planning Committee which oversees development in this fast-changing neighborhood.

Collaborations

Haley House has the good fortune to work with many community organizations in and around Boston:
  • The Food Project composts our food waste in the good weather while we purchase their fresh vegetables for our Cafe and Soup Kitchen
  • Discover Roxbury with whom we co-host Roxbury History evenings in the Bakery Cafe
  • Boston Collaborative for Food and Fitness - originally a Boston Public Health Commission program which now hosts First Friday conversations a the Cafe.
  • McKinley South End Academy and Hawthorne Community Center in Roxbury with whom we build and maintain urban gardens
  • The Color of Film Collaborative with whom we co-host dinner and a movie quarterly in the Cafe
  • Lovin' Spoonfuls and The Greater Boston Food Bank supply a large volume of our fresh food for the Soup Kitchen and Food Pantry

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

Maintaining clear and frequent communication throughout a multi-faceted organization such as Haley House is a formidable task. 
 
One method was to form a management team, the Core Staff. It was formed about six years ago to better assist cross-program communication. It is also the forum where organization-wide issues are discussed - for example, the review of the Strategic Plan's implementation.
 
Our social enterprise also maintains a management team which meets bi-weekly to focus on the business side of the Bakery Cafe. One constant challenge is the continued integration of the Bakery Cafe into the overall organizational structure given its different focus and separate location. Internally it is also challenging to plan regular meetings among the whole Bakery Cafe staff given their divergent schedules and family demands.
 
In addition to scheduled meetings, other opportunities for sharing ideas and solving problems happen in smaller venues and at social gatherings. The rich variety of events promoted at the Cafe become forums for cross-pollination of ideas and often lead to information transfer. Informal lunches at the Cafe also serve as communication tools. 
 
Haley House is fortunate to have the Bakery Cafe as an organizational communication platform. Its benefit crosses many boundaries internally as well as externally.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

gIn 2013, Haley House's only executive director (and co-founder) relinquished her leadership position. The board chose a new executive director, Bing Broderick, who had exemplified both a commitment to Haley House's mission and all the skills necessary for the next phase of organizational growth. Kathe McKenna, former executive director, accepted Bing's request to oversee distinct projects that hold a specific time-frame. Kathe's assistance will free Bing to focus his attention on organization-wide issues and external partnerships.  
 
The choice of Bing and the new role for Kathe exemplifies the strength inherent in the mission-driven commitment of staff and board, permitting a smooth leadership transition.
 
As Haley House considers growth into new neighborhoods with a honed model of social enterprise, we plan to address the challenges inherent in a multi-sited organization. Integrating our programming laterally has prepared us to meet this new development.

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section.
