LBD:MA draws on the power of architecture and design to build within each child an essential structure for learning and creating that will inform every endeavor in their lives. Today’s children are the designers of a better tomorrow.

We envision a world in which the design process is integral to the way every child learns, and all children value their connection to the architecture of their world. We fulfill this mission by:

  • bringing design activities focusing on people, places and spaces into the heart of K-12 learning
  • enabling students, teachers and architects to design and learn together, and
  • building a strong community dedicated to K-12 Architecture and Design Education.

Background Statement

Learning By Design in Massachusetts is a statewide K-12 architecture and design education program founded in 1999 as a program of the Boston Society of Architects/AIA. Recognizing the potential for a formal youth education organization, the BSA invited Jan Ham, a recipient of a Boston Foundation for Architecture grant for K-12 design education, to serve as the first director of LBD:MA. The program received its 501(c)(3) non-profit status in 2009.

LBD:MA design educators and volunteer architects engage children, in and out of schools, in hands-on, real-world design activities based on the places and spaces in their lives.

 In LBD:MA Children's Design Workshops, students use the engineering process of design, and 21stcentury skills from core curriculum areas, to complete hands-on, interdisciplinary design projects that enable them to express their ideas about their built environment, their community, and themselves. Program themes include:

·        Archi-Math;middle school activities connecting learning in mathematics and visual arts

·        Box City; a community-building experience

·        Design a House, Design a Story;a literacy-based design program for young children

·        Dream House Design; an educational, irresistible opportunity to design your own house 

·        Kids Design a Sustainable Future; a green architecture and design curriculum

·        Places to Learn; children as designers of learning environments

 In Professional Development Programs for Educators and Designers, architects and teachers from in-school, after-school and community programs, learn innovative, practical ways to use design as a catalyst for student learning.


LBD:MA also offers Curriculum Consulting Services to schools and organizations interested in developing K-12 architecture and design education programs.
 
 Since 1999, LBD:MA has given over 20,000 children, educators and designers the opportunity to design and learn together. Reaching a wide demographic of K-12 students, LBD:MA audiences include ESL students, children with disabilities and at-risk youth. Over the last 5 years, 77% of LBD:MA programs have reached underserved students.

 In 2012, LBD:MA moved into the Boston Society of Architects' headquarters at Atlantic Wharf. This new, larger space on Boston’s Fort Point Channel means higher visibility for LBD:MA, more opportunities to partner with local museums, and more space for programs, workshops and exhibits.

 


Impact Statement

IN THE PAST YEAR

2-Year Arts & STEM Initiative: we are completing a 2-year project funded by the National Endowment for the Arts that is engaging K-8 teachers and students in Boston, New Bedford and Holyoke in standards-based Visual Arts and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities based on the architecture of their cities.   

MCC CIP Program: we have been accepted into the Massachusetts Cultural Council’s Cultural Investment Portfolio program, and serviced one elementary school through a MCC Stars Grant.  

Sustainable Design Programs: we trained educators from the Museum Institute for Teachers of Science, Massachusetts Audubon Society, MA Environmental Educators Society and the Northeast Solar Energy Association in methods of teaching children about green/sustainable architecture and design; and engaged Boston schoolchildren in Kids Design a Sustainable Future activities.

Programs: in the past year we engaged 1175 children in 428 Children's Design Workshop sessions; and engaged 291 teachers and designers in professional development programs.

Organization: we have increased the size and scope of our board of directors; developed and implemented outcome-based program evaluation methods; and found a home in downtown Boston for our office and programs.

GOALS FOR THE CURRENT YEAR

This year we will: continue developing and delivering high-quality programs; increase meaningful involvement from volunteers; seek out beneficial strategic partnerships; and build a more sustainable organization through implementing strategies from our fund raising and marketing plans.


Needs Statement

Support for Programs for Underserved Youth:  Provide program support for K-12 Children’s Design Workshops in underserved communities.  $1000 will engage one classroom in a 6-session program, at a cost of $4.00 per participant hour. (2012 goal: 25 workshops)

Teachers Workshops & Resources: Provide support for Professional Development workshops for K-12 teachers (2012 goal: 12 PD [email protected] $1000 per program); and development of curriculum kits and resources ($2000).  

Fundraising, Marketing, Website: Increase staff capacity in fundraising and marketing: $80,000/year for 1 full-time development director and 1 part-time assistant.

Strategic Partnerships: Increase emphasis on partnerships with architecture and construction firms. Such partnerships would support LBD:MA programs and involve architects and designers in the process of increasing in the next generation the awareness of design as a career path and the importance of design in community. 

Volunteer Services: Develop a larger, more active volunteer program that would enable more architects and designers to participate in children's programs; and enable others to offer non-program services as well. ($25,000 per year for one half-time volunteer coordinator.)



CEO Statement

Why do we do what we do? As proponents of project-based learning, we know that children have the curiosity to form their own design questions, the creative ability to find their own solutions, and the higher-level thinking skills to communicate their ideas about those solutions. When we give our future designers, engineers, builders, decision-makers, and members of the global community the opportunity to communicate their ideas about their built and natural environments, we all benefit. We need our children to understand and care about the issues that challenge us today; we need their ideas for a sustainable future.

We are encouraged by, and will continue to build upon, the architecture community's strong commitment to K-12 design education; the willingness of schools--even during challenging economic times--to learn about and offer design education programs; and the unflagging enthusiasm of Massachusetts children for expressing their ideas about their world through design.


Board Chair Statement

I have been chair of the board at LBD:MA for nearly three years. In that time, I have found the team, led by Jan Ham and with Polly Carpenter and Erika Zekos, to be uniquely dedicated to their mission.For me, LBD:MA has always been about opening up the eyes of a new generation to the possibilities inherent in design thinking. They may be training the next generation of architects and designers, or they could be training the next generation of clients, or they may simply be educating the larger public about the importance of design in our every day lives. All of those potential outcomes can have a direct impact on the degree to which society values architects.

Childrens Design Workshops

LBD:MA engages Massachusetts children, in and out of schools, in real-world, project-based K-12 Architecture and Design Education workshops. Program Short-Term Success 

Sample Student Objectives: As students engage in design-based arts learning with teachers, architects and the architecture of their city they will: make connections between the arts and other disciplines (MA Arts Std 10); demonstrate knowledge of arts methods, materials, techniques and the elements and principles of design (MA Stds 1,2); demonstrate skill with the processes of creating, revising and exhibiting (MA Std. 4).

Students will: increase knowledge of green/sustainable architecture and design; increase understanding of the interconnectivity of Building Systems, People/Community Systems and Natural Systems; increase skills and knowledge in mathematics (particularly geometry and measurement); and gain measurable practice in using the engineering process of design and 21stcentury skills (creativity & innovation; critical thinking & problem-solving; communication & collaboration).

Children will use the design process in every endeavor of their lives. Today's children will become the designers of a better tomorrow.
Program Success Monitored By 

All of our programs are assessed according to their connections to learning standards in the Mathematics, Science, Technology & Engineering, Social Sciences and Language and Visual Arts. We use an outcomes-based model to inform our planning and to measure programmatic success. We use pre-and post-tests, projects and portfolios, and rubrics to assess the extent to which students successfully engage in design-based arts learning. 

We aim to achieve an 80% positive outcome rate both for participant learning (teachers, architects and students) and for the program.
Examples of Program Success 

Sample results from NEA-funded project: While students’ scores on pre and post-tests improved from an average of 20%, information was also gained by observing the students at work, and rating the quality of their projects. On rubrics, three classes of students in one school averaged scores of 4.1 out of 5.0 for their participation in the Box City process.

Informal evidence of the program’s success was gathered by listening to students incorporate an increasingly sophisticated understanding of Art and Design processes as they discussed and critiqued their work: “In the beginning of the project the children were acting like they usually do-- each working on their own,  often asking whether what they were doing was ‘right’ or ‘wrong.’ By midway through the project they were acting like designers– picking right up the next day where they left off, having great design conversations as they worked, making good decisions on their own.” (LBD:MA Design Educator, New Bedford)     


Curriculum Consulting

LBD:MA also offers Curriculum Consulting Services to schools and organizations interested in developing K-12 architecture and design education programs.

Community organizations come to LBD:MA, time and again stating that they want to involve more children in community design, but lack the expertise to be that “educational piece” that LBD:MA can provide.
 
At the House of the Seven Gables and the Peabody Essex Museum, and for Discover Roxbury, LBD:MA has developed and piloted hands-on building tours.

Professional Development Workshops

By offering Professional Development Workshops from 5-15 hours in length, LBD:MA meets the needs of educators in K-12 schools, community organizations and out-of-school-time programs across the state. In PD workshops teachers work with architects to develop project-based lesson plans that will enable them to teach what they need to teach, through design.

Guided by the design process used by engineers and artists alike, teachers enjoy becoming designer themselves – redesigning a classroom, creating an outdoor learning space; and drafting floor plans for a dream house. They plan and build 3-d scale models, increase their awareness of architecture through local walking tours;  develop projects that will help students use their community as a focus of study; and find ways to encourage students to write about the architecture projects that they create.

Impacts on Teachers: LBD:MA workshops aim to: enable teachers to demonstrate increased knowledge and skills needed to engage children in 21st century Arts and STEM learning, consistent with state educational standards; increase teachers' confidence in applying design education methods in the classroom. 
 
As architects also participate in PD workshops, these workshops also aim to: increase architects' confidence in and ability to co-teach Children's Design Workshops alongside classroom teachers. 
Program Long-Term Success  While Massachusetts learning standards state that children should: “use the design process to solve problems; use mathematics within a real world context; understand science and technology in the contexts of society, history and human affairs; and develop a sense of stewardship for the environments that sustain them now and for generations to come,” teacher surveys and interviews reveal a gap in their knowledge about and a lack of confidence in their ability to teach design.  LBD:MA professional development workshops aim to bridge that gap.
Program Success Monitored By 

LBD:MA uses an outcome-based model to measure and document the  success of our professional development workshops. Pre- and post-tests, rubrics, observations and surveys are providing evaluation results.   

Examples of Program Success 

Surveys  to classroom teachers gave high marks to the teaching abilities of LBD:MA master teachers (37.5 out of 40 points); the value added to the program by volunteer architects (37 out of 40 points); and the quality of program materials (28.5 out of 30 points). When asked to rate how well the program met specific educational objectives, the teachers rated the program at 46.5 out of 50 points.

Teachers also demonstrated their learning by successfully leading their students through design activities. As one reported: "Teaching by Design is a process, a way of thinking, the bones to hang everything else on. You wrestle your thinking into a plan, to create something. The same for writing, and for school, it’s all the process. That is what is so seductive about the design process. Who knew? Why didn’t anyone tell me when I was in 2ndgrade? I want to tell the teachers at my school to let this in, it will bring you more of a structure to hang the rest of your teaching on."

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section. The purpose of the Impact section is to ask five deceptively simple questions that require reflection and promote communication about what really matters – results. The goal is to encourage strategic thinking about how a nonprofit will achieve its goals.
