Building Resilience in Kids (BRIK) is a small non-profit helping children directly and through their caregivers to build resilience. BRIK offers workshops and programs that allow children to express themselves creatively while building positive relationships with those around them.

To foster the relationships that build resilience, Building Resilience in Kids (BRIK) has been innovating workshops for the training of parents and professionals to work toward building resilience, as well as workshops that directly address kids and teens by working on creative activities in peer groups. 

 


Background Statement

Building Resilience in Kids (BRIK) began as Kids on the Brink of Adolescence. The founder, psychologist Georgia Sassen, was struck by the many lives in which even one good reliable relationship would have made all the difference for a patient who had experienced neglect, poverty or trauma—a fact supported by research. She found that good connection could be fostered in a safe discussion environment. But in low income and immigrant communities, many girls do not speak English as a first language, or their culture disapproves of face-to-face discussion. For these girls, making art in groups became an effective vehicle for bringing them together. Art from the Heart, developed by Dr. Sassen and Sue Corneliussen, became a model used in every middle school in Lowell, MA. 

     Wanting to support academic progress as well as relational development or “Social Emotional Learning” we created a poetry program, but it was less effective. This led to a period of reflection on how to build an academic skill – literacy -- into our work with children. 

    As we worked with urban children, it was clear that working with their teachers would help them provide a more relationship-fostering atmosphere at school. Teachers, too, valued a sense of connectedness with each other, so BRIK’s “Making Connections at School” was founded in 2007, getting rave reviews from participants. 

     Meanwhile, after reflecting on the literacy issue, Dr. Sassen conceived of the idea of using engaging rhythms to draw children into poetry. Collaborative writing with drumming as the rhythmic background became “Drums and Poems.” From 2009 to 2012, BRIK’s team of researchers tested and improved the program in the Waltham schools. Now Drumsand Poems is being used in Cambridge and Cincinnati, where it helps traumatized children and youth. Our ideas are disseminated in professional journals and trainings.

     As the work with the arts developed, we realized that the connection-building techniques we were developing would be successful in other youth agencies. We have partnered with Science Clubs for Girls, with a grant from Mattel’s Community Foundation launching Making Connections through Science. To support girls in technical fields, mentors use the power of relationships they learn about from us. All of these programs fit together around the idea that resilience is built through relationship, and engaging children in exciting environments is the ideal place for them to learn the joy of connection.


Impact Statement

With grants from small foundations, the Mattel Community Foundation and most recently the Waltham Education and Beyond Foundation, and with donations from hundreds of individuals, BRIK has impacted hundreds of children directly, and thousands through their teachers and social workers. 

  • BRIK provided trainings for after school staff on helping children build relationships and understand their feelings for 38 Lowell nonprofits. 
  • BRIK worked with Greater Lawrence Community Health Center to use Art from the Heart in an obesity-prevention group for children.
  • Five of the six middle school social workers in the Lowell Public Schools have been trained in Art from the Heart (a 10-14 week training).
  • Making Connections at School groups (Formerly called Building Relationships in Schools) have been held at three locations, open to teachers throughout Lowell.
  • Four trainings on “Building Relationships in School: Discovering Your Relational Intelligence” have been held for Lowell teachers.
  • Art from the Heart Groups have been held at Girls Inc (an after school program) and the staff there trained in working with girls using Art from the Heart and the relational-cultural model of development.
  • Since 2009, we have provided a new program, Drums and Poems, in Waltham and Cambridge public schools. This program continues our work on supporting children’s relational development and adds literacy building. Children learn that words are fun to play with as they learn to make poems together while drumming on homemade drums.
  • We are currently developing new applications for Drums and Poems and our director has published two papers in a professional journal so that others in the field (educators, social workers and expressive therapists) can use the techniques she has created.
  • Our director has taught the Drums and Poems technique at conferences for psychologists and social workers, and this year will teach Art from the Heart techniques to art therapy graduate students in Ireland and Massachusetts.

Needs Statement

BRIK needs funds to continue helping children build good relationships. We plan to continue the Drums and Poems program in public schools in low income areas and to train educators and mental health personnel in using the technique to help children build resilience through relationship. Although we have trained social workers throughout Lowell in our other resilience building program, Art form the Heart, we need to offer this training more widely, and offer Art from the Heart in other low income communities.

Specifically we need funds to:

  • Fund a training session for Massachusetts educators in helping children build relationships at little or no charge.
  • Continue offering Drums and Poems and train social work and education interns who can carry on our work.
  • Bring our programs to rural and semi-rural areas of need in New England.
  • Hire an office manager to improve our ability to respond to institutions that want our programs, and staff to document our trainings so that videos and webinars can reach more practitioners.

Making Connections at School

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section. The purpose of the Impact section is to ask five deceptively simple questions that require reflection and promote communication about what really matters – results. The goal is to encourage strategic thinking about how a nonprofit will achieve its goals. Our program “Drums and Poems” which helps elementary school children build empathy and literacy skills through drumming and creating group poetry, continues. We are honored to now be part of the school day program rather than an after school activity at the Martin Luther King Jr. School in Cambridge, MA. The MLK School is a public school near Central Square in Cambridge, MA, where we have offered this program from third, fourth and fifth graders for three years.
We also continue to train undergraduates and graduate students in leading Drums and Poems and understanding how the Relational Cultural Model of human development can inform the building of social emotional skills and empathy in children. Our interns in the past year, Sunny Zhiang and Nicole Shelpman plan to use the skills they learned in their work with high school and middle school children as they continue in their work with urban children.
This year we also offered a one day course for masters level social workers at the Smith College School for Social Work continuing education program, focusing on the empathy-building aspects of Drums and Poems and using the Relational Cultural Theory to inform this work.
