Overview

Mission Statement

Cancer Education and Research Institute (CERI, http://canceredinstitute.org), formerly Cancer Research Simplified, is an independent, 501(c)(3) global nonprofit organization. Its mission is to 1.) provide simplified information about cancer and cancer research to cancer patients and the general public, 2.) bridge the gap between cancer scientists and cancer patients; and 3.) provide cancer research scholarships for high school students worldwide.

Mission Statement

Background Statement

Through its online educational programs, including educational videos on Youtube, and its strong presence in social media, Cancer Education and Research Institute (CERI), formerly Cancer Research Simplified, have reached a broad audience worldwide over 150 countries and all 50 states in the United States of America within only two-and-a-half years of its existence. Understanding a complex disease like cancer can be challenging, especially for laymen with no technical background. We understand the burden and panic cancer patients and family members going through upon cancer diagnosis. Therefore, CERI was founded in 2013 by an award-winning cancer researcher Ayguen Sahin, MSc, PhD, a former Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School faculty member (read Dr. Sahin’s story on why she founded CERI on our website), to bring science “down” to people, and educate them about all aspects of cancer in a simplified, non-technical way, furthermore, in multiple languages. Cancer is a global disease and lack of cancer education is a global problem is cancer patients and family members, for example, in Boston are as equally scared and feeling lost by all the information circulating in the media as those living in South Africa. (this statement was particularly experienced by the founder as well as a former CERI team member, Len Bernardt, a Radio-Oncology Therapist from South Africa.) Therefore, CERI is effectively approaching this problem locally, nationally, and globally.

Within its third year of existence, we have received several award and honors (press releases can be read on our website), including:

  • winning the 2014, 2015, 2016, and 2017 Top-Rated Nonprofit Awards by Great Nonprofits;
  • winning a finalist position at the Harvard Extension Business Society, ‘Pitch Your Passion’ pitch contest;
  • being invited to the Rev2014 Conference in D.C.;
  • visiting Mass. Senator Markey’s Office in D.C.
  • Receiving grant from Genentech for our Public Cancer Symposium Series

Programs

Public Cancer Symposium/Lecture Series

This is a continuation of our Public Cancer Symposium/Lecture Series 2015, which covered Breast, Lung, Colon, and Prostate Cancer Symposiums/Lectures.
We plan to expand this very well received programs with much larger audience.
Budget  $40,000.00
Category  Diseases, Disorders & Medical Disciplines, General/Other Cancer
Population Served People/Families of People with Cancer Adults Poor,Economically Disadvantaged,Indigent
Program Short-Term Success  People leaving our programs are having a big smile in their face, knowing that they have learned so much about their disease/a cancer type than they ever have. Our post-program surveys showed that people will actually perform the necessary changes in their lives they just had learned at our Symposiums/Lectures, such as ask doctors more questions, eat more healthy, do more exercise etc.
Program Long-Term Success  Long-term, our programs will help cancer patients to be empowered by knowing so much more about their disease (we provide simple, nontechnical cancer education, free of medical jargon for the layman to easily understand), and the general public to know more about cancer prevention methods and their importance, and overall a general understanding of the disease and specific cancer type.

Testimonial by Emma: "Cancer Research Simplified provides us the information we need and looking for in a way that we can reach easily and understand. Also, I find the symposiums they have been organizing are informative and help to find answers to the questions I have in my mind about cancer types and treatments."

Sports and Recreation Events-Fundraisers

Our sports and recreation events are unique - they are fun and educational.

As a cancer education nonprofit, our mission is to educate people about cancer, its development in the body, diagnosis, treatment, as well as prevention. As part of the education of cancer prevention program we provide in all of our lectures, this sports and recreation program of ours practices what it preaches. Through active outdoors activities in fresh air and healthy food, we show children and adults alike how to live a healthier lifestyle.

Budget  $4,500.00
Category  Recreation & Sports, General/Other
Population Served General/Unspecified
Program Short-Term Success
Short-terms success is visible right away after each event: Attendees are smiling, are happy, feeling healthy and accomplished, and they have met new people while having a good time and being active.

Program Long-Term Success  Our long-term goal with this program is to educate people actively about how to create and maintain a healthier lifestyle, while providing information and resources on how eat healthy and be active. The new and improved lifestyle of the attendees will give the courage and passion to pass this on to their children, family members, friends, and their surroundings. These activities are a key for a step-by-step, active cancer prevention program.

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section. The purpose of the Impact section is to ask five deceptively simple questions that require reflection and promote communication about what really matters – results. The goal is to encourage strategic thinking about how a nonprofit will achieve its goals. The following Impact questions are being completed by nonprofits slowly, thoughtfully and at the right time for their respective organizations to ensure the most accurate information possible.

1. What is your organization aiming to accomplish?

--

2. What are your strategies for making this happen?

--

3. What are your organization’s capabilities for doing this?

--

4. How will your organization know if you are making progress?

--

5. What have and haven’t you accomplished so far?

--
