Overview

Mission Statement

RYSL is a non-profit organization whose mission is to engage youth through the game if soccer. RYSL works to foster and support young individuals physically, mentally and emotionally on and off the field. It is RYSL's goal to strengthen a sense of community, team building, healthy lifestyle, positivity and pride, in addition to developing and excelling at the game of soccer. RYSL prides itself on being a consistent program in the Roxbury community.

Background Statement

RYSL began 11 years ago as a project developed by local college students looking to improve the health of residents in the Roxbury neighborhood. At that time RYSL began a partnership with the local YMCA who provided the program with field space. In return RYSL brought youth and families to the area. After nine successful years at the YMCA, RYSL decided to operate independently in order to provide a consistent program at a low cost in order to reach as many families as possible. In RYSL's 10th year, the program moved to a city owned green space right in the heart of Roxbury. Since the move RYSL has built a relationship with a local community center, Boston Public school and an area homeless shelter for children. RYSL is 100% run by volunteers who all live in the community and many who also are employed within the city.

Impact Statement

-RYSL graduated 8 seasoned recreational soccer players to participating in full season travel soccer programs throughout the city and state.
-In October 2015 RYSL participated in the City of Boston's Mayor's Youth Soccer Cup fielding a boys team.
-RYSL became and active member and participant of the City's Youth Soccer Initiative working along side youth soccer programs representing various neighborhoods of Boston.

CEO/Executive Director/Board Comments

One challenge RYSL has faced has been the ability to take our recreational program and expand to include a competitive travel program. Currently, there is no dedicated soccer field in the Roxbury area. Due to the lack of funds RYSL has yet to purchase the regulation sized goals to meet the national requirements. RYSL is currently exploring options to obtain financial support to raise the funds for equipment.

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section. The purpose of the Impact section is to ask five deceptively simple questions that require reflection and promote communication about what really matters – results. The goal is to encourage strategic thinking about how a nonprofit will achieve its goals. The following Impact questions are being completed by nonprofits slowly, thoughtfully and at the right time for their respective organizations to ensure the most accurate information possible.

1. What is your organization aiming to accomplish?

--

2. What are your strategies for making this happen?

--

3. What are your organization’s capabilities for doing this?

--

4. How will your organization know if you are making progress?

--

5. What have and haven’t you accomplished so far?

--
