Background Statement

The Boston Arts Festival is designed to showcase the visual and performing arts in Boston. Affectionately dubbed (ähts), it was founded in 2003 by Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the City of Boston’s Office of Arts, Tourism and Special Events with the mission of promoting the Open Studios Weekends happening throughout the Fall in Boston’s neighborhoods. The Festival is an annual 2-day event that takes place the second weekend in September, from 11am – 6:30 pm, at Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. It is free, open to the public, handicapped accessible and family-friendly.

The Boston Arts Festival is now a 501(c)3 and run by the organizers of the Beacon Hill Art Walk and Artists Crossing Gallery. Featuring more than 70 juried local visual artists and craftspeople, plus local musicians performing on the Waterfront Stage throughout the day, the event brings over 40,000 visitors to Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park, on Boston Harbor, where they can meet the artists and craftspeople who are there to share a wide variety of art and high-end craft work, including painting, photography, ceramics, jewelry and sculpture, and much more.

Impact Statement

Our 2017 event was a great success for 1. the local visual artists selling their artwork had excellent sales; 2. the Boston-area musicians performing onstage throughout the weekend had fantastic performances, were exposed to a wide new audience,  gained new fans and exposure, and sold their CDs; 3. the attendees, including local Boston residents and visitors,  enjoyed the free access to the high quality visual art and the musical performances; 4. the Sponsors and Promotional Vendors who interacted with the attendees were very happy with the ROI; 5. neighboring businesses benefited from the increased numbers of people in the area throughout the weekend.

Needs Statement

Our most pressing needs are 1. Sponsors to provide financial support; 2. Donations to contribute to financial support; 3. Fundraising help for new supporters; 4. Marketing & Public Relations assistance; 5. Volunteers for the weekend of the event.

Impact

The Impact tab is a section on the Giving Common added in October 2013; as such the majority of nonprofits have not yet had the chance to complete this voluntary section. The purpose of the Impact section is to ask five deceptively simple questions that require reflection and promote communication about what really matters – results. The goal is to encourage strategic thinking about how a nonprofit will achieve its goals. The following Impact questions are being completed by nonprofits slowly, thoughtfully and at the right time for their respective organizations to ensure the most accurate information possible.

1. What is your organization aiming to accomplish?

--

2. What are your strategies for making this happen?

--

3. What are your organization’s capabilities for doing this?

--

4. How will your organization know if you are making progress?

--

5. What have and haven’t you accomplished so far?

--
